smol hand bars

Something that bubbled up from the pandemic was the fact that regular hand washing is one of the best ways to remove germs, avoid getting sick, and prevent the spread of germs to others.

Soap sales doubled in the UK across 2020. And the amount of single-use plastic soap bottles entering the waste systems skyrocketed. Most were burnt or went to landfill because our recycling is not working.

Time to bring back the bar.

liquid liability.

Most liquid hand wash is detergent rather than soap, and so foaming additives are included to create a bubbling soap-like effect. Some of these additives can cause skin irritation and allergic reactions.

Sometimes even worse additives are included to preserve the liquid, like triclosan and parabens. They can also cause skin irritation, allergic reactions and even potentially disrupt our hormones.

In recent years, many of us have become used to reaching for an ‘antibacterial handwash’ expecting this to be even better for our health. But washing our hands with regular soap or handwash is the best way to remove bacteria, and antibacterial versions just rub aggressive biocides over our skin unnecessarily. In the US the FDA even went as far as to ban almost all antibacterial handwashes because of the lack of benefit over regular handwash [source].

And then of course there’s the plastic packaging. Only tiny amounts are getting recycled.

some other reasons to LOVE smol’s new hand soap bars…

save your energy.

A 2009 Swiss study* found that overall, the carbon footprint of liquid hand soap is 25% larger than that of bar soaps on a per wash basis:

  • Liquid hand soap uses 5x more energy to make than solid bar soap

  • It also uses 20x more energy to package than solid bar soap

  • And washing our hands with liquid soap requires 7x more product than solid bar soap

longer lasting clean.

Solid soap cleans every bit as well as a liquid, in fact it has been suggested that the added  friction from rubbing the bar in your hands makes it more effective at removing visible dirt.

But the extra great news is that solid hand bars can last 6x longer than a plastic bottle of liquid hand soap. So you’ll not only save 6 plastic bottles from needing to be used… you’ll be saving £££s as well.

dermatologically tested.

Our bar soap is free from SLS, parabens and silicone PLUS it’s been dermatologically tested as safe for those of us with sensitive skin.

plastic-free.

Your hands are going to thank you for ditching all those single-use plastic bottles and so will our planet. Our cardboard boxes come from FSC cardboard that can be easily recycled in your kerbside collection or added to your garden compost. And there’s no waste from your bar, just lots of bubbles and lovely clean hands.

water bout the carbon?

Liquid hand soaps are 80% water and that makes them really heavy compared to a bar of hand soap. Transporting heavy bottles of liquid around means a much higher carbon footprint so stick with your solids and just combine them with water from your tap that’s already waiting for you.

you’ll never run out.
